A dy(e)ing Art

书法 shūfǎ : literally “way or method of writing”, or more commonly known as Calligraphy, is an important and appreciated aspect of Chinese culture, and is widely regarded as an art. The term Calligraphy comes from the greek words kallos, which means beauty, and graphe, which means writing, and was traditionally practised by the scholarly class. In ancient China, scholars taking the Imperial Examination had to display a flair for Calligraphy in order to become governors.

Nowadays, Chinese Calligraphy still has an important part in the Chinese language and culture. It conveys ideas and emotions not just through words, but also through its abstract beauty. The lines and rhythms of Chinese calligraphy evoke impressions that can touch viewers from all walks of life, even on those who are unable to access the deeper aesthetic meaning conveyed through the language. It is no wonder that Pablo Picasso once said that had he been born a Chinese, he would have been a calligrapher, not a painter.
